ISEC Cameroon Equips Young People with Practical AI Skills Through “AI for Everyday Productivity” Workshop

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way people learn, work, communicate, and solve everyday challenges. Recognising the importance of preparing young people for this changing digital landscape, the International Student Environmental Coalition (ISEC) Cameroon successfully hosted its AI for Everyday Productivity virtual workshop, bringing together students, recent graduates, and young professionals from across Cameroon for an engaging and practical learning experience.

Organized in commemoration of World Youth Skills Day, the 0ver 2 hours webinar was designed to demystify Artificial Intelligence by presenting it not as a complex technology reserved for experts, but as an accessible tool that anyone can use to become more productive, organized, and competitive in today's digital world.

Why This Workshop Matters

As Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education, employment, business, and everyday life, digital literacy is no longer optional—it is essential.

While many young people have heard about AI, relatively few understand how it actually works or how to use it effectively and responsibly. The workshop sought to bridge this knowledge gap by providing participants with practical skills they could immediately apply in their studies, careers, businesses, and personal lives.

The training aimed to:

• Introduce AI as a practical everyday productivity tool.

• Demonstrate how AI can simplify writing, reading, communication, and organisation.

• Equip participants with digital skills that enhance academic success, career development, and professional productivity.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence Beyond the Hype

The first session, facilitated by Cecile Bih, focused on helping participants understand what Artificial Intelligence really is.

Rather than presenting AI as a futuristic concept, the session explored how it has quietly become part of everyday life through predictive text, spam filters, navigation systems, smart assistants, image recognition, and social media platforms.

Participants learned how modern AI systems identify patterns from large amounts of data and generate text, images, code, and other forms of content. The session also highlighted several practical ways AI can assist with daily tasks, including summarising documents, organizing information, brainstorming ideas, and drafting communications.

Equally important was a discussion about AI's limitations. Participants were reminded that AI does not possess human judgment, can sometimes generate inaccurate information with confidence, and should always be used alongside critical thinking, verification, and responsible decision-making.

From Theory to Practice: Using AI for Everyday Productivity

The second session, presented by Tcheulo Njike Rives, shifted the focus from understanding AI to using it effectively.

Participants explored practical AI workflows that can save time and improve the quality of everyday work. A major emphasis was placed on prompting—the skill of giving clear and detailed instructions to AI systems to obtain better results.

The session demonstrated how the quality of AI responses depends largely on the quality of the prompts provided. Participants learned how to structure prompts by providing context, defining clear tasks, specifying the desired format, setting the appropriate tone, and including relevant constraints.

Through practical demonstrations, attendees discovered how AI can support:

Professional Writing and Communication

Participants learned how AI can transform rough ideas or scattered notes into professional emails, reports, proposals, LinkedIn posts, WhatsApp announcements, and other forms of communication within seconds, while emphasising the importance of reviewing every output before use.

Career Development

The workshop showcased how AI can help optimise CVs, tailor job applications, draft cover letters, and even simulate interview practice, enabling young professionals to prepare more effectively for employment opportunities.

Reading and Information Processing

Participants explored how AI can summarize lengthy reports, research papers, and articles, making it easier to extract key insights without spending hours reading large volumes of text.

Content Creation and Design

The session also demonstrated how AI can assist with brainstorming ideas, planning presentation slides, generating visual concepts, and supporting the creation of social media content. Using examples from Clean Air Initiative Cameroon, participants saw how AI can enhance communication campaigns while complementing human creativity rather than replacing it.

Responsible AI Use Remains Essential

One of the strongest messages throughout the workshop was that Artificial Intelligence should be viewed as a tool—not a substitute for human expertise.

Participants were encouraged to remember that better inputs produce better outputs. AI performs best when users provide clear instructions, sufficient context, and thoughtful guidance.

The facilitators also stressed the importance of verifying AI-generated information, protecting personal data, remaining authentic, and exercising good judgment whenever AI is used for academic, professional, or personal purposes.

Rather than replacing people, AI has the potential to enhance human productivity, creativity, and problem-solving when used responsibly.

Building Future-Ready Digital Skills

The enthusiasm and active participation throughout the workshop reflected the growing interest among young people in understanding and embracing emerging technologies.

By combining foundational AI knowledge with practical demonstrations and real-world examples, the workshop empowered participants to move beyond curiosity and begin integrating AI into their daily workflows in meaningful and responsible ways.

Participants left the session with a clearer understanding of what AI can do, where it adds value, where its limitations lie, and how they can continue building their digital skills beyond the workshop.
