On March 24, 2026, the International Student Environmental Coalition (ISEC) Cameroon carried out another impactful outreach under the Bamenda Zero Waste Initiative at Lum Agnes Memorial Bilingual Nursery and Primary School, Ntaghang.
This outreach brought together over 300 pupils aged 3 to 12 years, along with teachers and school administrators, in a vibrant and interactive learning experience focused on environmental sustainability.

Why Early Environmental Education Matters
Building a sustainable future starts with education — and the earlier, the better. At ISEC Cameroon, we believe that children are not just future leaders; they are present-day change agents capable of influencing behaviors within their homes and communities.
This outreach was designed to introduce young learners to key environmental concepts and empower them with practical knowledge they can apply in their daily lives.
📚 What We Taught
The session was structured to be both educational and engaging, ensuring that pupils could easily understand and relate to the topics discussed. Key focus areas included:
Understanding the Environment and its importance to human well-being
Waste Management Practices, including proper waste separation and disposal
Circular Economy Principles, emphasizing reuse and recycling
Climate Change Awareness, including causes, impacts, and simple preventive actions
Pollution Education, covering types, causes, and environmental consequences
Through storytelling, demonstrations, and interactive discussions, pupils were encouraged to actively participate, ask questions, and share their own experiences.
🎯 A Hands-On Learning Experience
One of the highlights of the outreach was the practical demonstration of waste separation, where pupils learned how to identify and sort different types of waste.
This hands-on approach made the learning process more relatable and impactful, reinforcing the idea that small daily actions can lead to significant environmental change.
🤝 Collaboration and Participation
The success of this outreach was made possible through the strong collaboration between ISEC volunteers and the school community.
Over 300 pupils actively participated
Around 12 school staff members, including teachers and administrators, were engaged
A dedicated team of ISEC volunteers facilitated the sessions
The enthusiasm and openness of both pupils and staff created a welcoming environment that enhanced learning and interaction.
🌟 Key Outcomes and Impact
The outreach achieved several important outcomes:
Increased awareness of environmental protection and sustainability among pupils
Improved understanding of climate change and waste management practices
Strong interest from the school in establishing an environmental club
Commitment from the school administration to support future environmental activities
Perhaps most importantly, the outreach sparked curiosity and motivation among the children — a critical step toward long-term behavioral change.
🔄 What’s Next?
ISEC Cameroon is committed to sustaining this momentum through:
Supporting the creation of school environmental clubs
Organizing follow-up visits and practical activities, such as gardening and composting
Promoting recycling initiatives within schools
Expanding the Bamenda Zero Waste Initiative to reach more communities
💚 A Collective Responsibility
Environmental challenges such as poor waste management and climate change require collective action — and that includes empowering even the youngest members of our society.
By investing in environmental education today, we are laying the foundation for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable tomorrow.
Conclusion
The outreach at Lum Agnes Memorial School was more than just a learning session — it was a step toward building a generation that understands, values, and protects the environment.
At ISEC Cameroon, we remain committed to driving grassroots environmental education and ensuring that no one is too young to make a difference.
