On April 22, 2026, as the world commemorated Earth Day under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” the International Student Environmental Coalition (ISEC) Cameroon team marked the occasion with a meaningful environmental outreach at Lum Agnes Memorial Bilingual Nursery and Primary School Ntaghang.

This initiative brought together over 300 pupils between the ages of 3 and 12 in an engaging and educational experience designed to inspire environmental awareness, responsibility, and action from an early age. The outreach reflected ISEC Cameroon’s continued commitment to building a generation of environmentally conscious citizens through education, practical engagement, and community-based initiatives.

Building Environmental Awareness from the Ground Up

Environmental education is most impactful when introduced early. With this in mind, the outreach was carefully structured to ensure that young learners could understand and connect with key environmental concepts in a simple, relatable, and engaging manner.

The sessions focused on:

  • The meaning and global significance of Earth Day

  • The relationship between human activities and the health of the environment

  • The causes and consequences of deforestation and climate change

  • The importance of protecting natural resources and ecosystems

  • Everyday actions children can take to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment

Through interactive discussions and participatory learning methods, the pupils demonstrated strong curiosity and enthusiasm. The approach emphasized not just knowledge transfer, but also the development of values and attitudes that encourage environmental responsibility.

Learning by Doing: Establishing a School Garden

A key highlight of the outreach was the creation of a school garden—an initiative that brought environmental education to life through hands-on experience.

With guidance from ISEC team members, the pupils actively participated in practical gardening activities, including soil preparation, planting, and watering. These activities introduced them to the basic principles of agriculture, plant care, and sustainability.

The school garden serves multiple purposes:

  • It acts as a living classroom where students can continuously learn about nature and food systems

  • It reinforces lessons on environmental stewardship and responsibility

  • It promotes sustainable practices such as local food production and care for green spaces

By directly involving the children in the process, the activity fostered a sense of ownership and pride, ensuring that the lessons learned extend beyond the classroom.

Advancing ISEC Cameroon’s Flagship Initiatives

This outreach is part of a broader, integrated approach to environmental education and sustainability led by ISEC Cameroon. It aligns closely with several of the organization’s flagship programs, including:

  • The Green Earth Initiative, which focuses on environmental education, tree planting, and youth empowerment through school-based programs

  • The Bamenda Zero Waste Initiative, which promotes responsible waste management practices and encourages communities to reduce, reuse, and recycle

  • School Garden Programs, which combine climate education with practical agricultural skills to enhance sustainability and resilience

Through these initiatives, ISEC Cameroon continues to expand its impact by connecting education with action, and awareness with practical solutions.

Impact and Outcomes

The outreach recorded significant positive outcomes. Pupils gained foundational knowledge on environmental sustainability and developed a clearer understanding of their role in protecting the planet. The practical gardening session enhanced their learning experience and strengthened their interest in environmental activities.

Equally important was the strong engagement from the school administration and teachers, who welcomed the initiative and expressed interest in sustaining and expanding such activities within the school environment.

The establishment of the school garden stands as a lasting outcome of the outreach—one that will continue to benefit both current and future pupils.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining the Momentum

Building on the success of this outreach, ISEC Cameroon aims to deepen its engagement with schools in Bamenda and across the country. Planned follow-up actions include:

  • Supporting the establishment of environmental and eco-clubs in schools

  • Conducting regular visits to monitor and maintain school gardens

  • Introducing composting and recycling practices within school communities

  • Expanding environmental education programs to reach more students

These efforts are geared toward ensuring continuity, strengthening impact, and embedding sustainability into the daily lives of young learners.

Conclusion

The Earth Day outreach in Bamenda was more than a celebration—it was a meaningful step toward nurturing a culture of environmental responsibility among young people. By combining education with practical action, ISEC Cameroon is helping to shape a generation that understands the importance of protecting the environment and is equipped to take action.

As the theme of this year’s Earth Day reminds us, “Our Power, Our Planet,” the future of our environment lies in the choices we make today—and in the knowledge and values we pass on to the next generation.
