Each year, Earth Day serves as a global reminder of our collective responsibility to protect the environment. At the International Student Environmental Coalition Cameroon, we believe that the power to create lasting change lies in the hands of young people. That’s why this year, in celebration of Earth Day 2025, our Yaoundé team led a vibrant environmental education campaign at CENEFOV Nursery and Primary School in Obili, bringing climate action directly to the classroom.

Empowering Young Minds Through Environmental Education
On April 22, 2025, ISEC Cameroon engaged over 50 pupils at Cenefov School in a dynamic learning experience designed to spark curiosity and action. The session focused on equipping young learners with the knowledge and practical tools to better understand and care for their environment. With interactive presentations and hands-on activities, our team introduced the students to key environmental topics including:
Urban Gardening – Pupils learned how to grow vegetables and herbs in small spaces. Together, we built a small school garden using recycled materials like old tires, planting seeds and learning how soil and compost contribute to healthy plants.
Waste Management and Recycling – The children explored different types of waste, the importance of sorting and recycling, and how individual actions can reduce pollution. We also donated waste bins to the school to help improve sanitation and waste separation practices.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – We introduced the SDGs as a roadmap for a sustainable future, highlighting how even the youngest members of society can contribute to goals such as clean water, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption.
Climate Storytelling – Through engaging stories and role-plays, the students were encouraged to express their thoughts about climate change and environmental issues, building their confidence and creativity while developing environmental awareness.
Nurturing Responsibility and Leadership at a Young Age
This initiative aligns with ISEC Cameroon’s mission to challenge the notion that climate change solutions are out of reach for individuals. By focusing on education and empowerment, especially among youth, we foster a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders who believe in their ability to shape a sustainable future.
The Earth Day event in Yaoundé also served as a prelude to the World Environmental Education Day observed each January, reinforcing our commitment to long-term engagement with schools and communities.
Results and Impact
At the end of the day, the campaign not only educated but also inspired the students. Many expressed enthusiasm for taking care of their school environment, planting more trees at home, and sharing what they learned with their families and peers.
Our measurable outcomes included:
Sensitizing over 50 young students on key environmental themes,
Creating a mini urban garden within the school,
Reducing future school waste through bin donations,
Introducing a climate storytelling program that will continue through follow-up sessions.
Looking Ahead: Our Power, Our Planet
This Earth Day, we are reminded that "Our Power, Our Planet" begins with youth. By engaging children at an early age, we plant seeds of environmental stewardship that will grow for years to come.
ISEC Cameroon remains committed to promoting environmental education, sustainability, and youth empowerment across the country. Through grassroots campaigns like this, we are nurturing the changemakers who will lead the way toward a cleaner, greener Cameroon.
